Nyargh .. lol sorry my pc crashed and burned as i was trying to. I opened the start menu and it seemed my explorer crashed. The desktop refreshed itself then the computer shut down and restarted. I noticed in my task manager as i started up a few processes which didnt want to go away as i closed them. Dumprep.exe and savedump.exe to name a few.

Please download *SmitfraudFix* (by *S!Ri*)

Extract (unzip) the content (a folder named *SmitfraudFix*) to your Desktop. *This is imperative for the tool to function properly.* If using a utility such as winzip you will have to direct it there as it will not unzip to the desktop by default. The desination location should look like this (C: being your primary drive): *C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\SmitfraudFix*

Open the *SmitfraudFix* folder and double-click *smitfraudfix.cmd*
Select option #1 - *Search* by typing *1* and press "*Enter*"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

*Note* : *process.exe* is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

By the way can i ask quickly The link you provided under the note previously (beyondlogic) - am i to download that or is it just for reference? Also my windows is trying to get me to setup a system scan and im gettin that annoyin "your computer is infected" balloon over and over. I'm guessing it's detected that process.exe you mentioned?

----------

## Cookiegal (Aug 27, 2003)

No, that link is just a reference.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in *Safe Mode* by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the *SmitfraudFix* folder again and double-click *smitfraudfix.cmd*
Select option #2 - *Clean* by typing *2* and press "*Enter*" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing *Y* and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if *wininet.dll* is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing *Y* and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at *C:\rapport.txt*

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Something quite strange is happening now also. I noticed the clock in the task bar was changing back and forth and the mouse over revealed my pc thought it was the 25th december :s - hardly christams like haha. Also two processes appeared to crash and fail. I can't view my processes because an 'Admin has disabled task manager'. The two processes were something like vxsgame4 and 6.exe Asked me to send an error report which i didnt. And the bubble keeps telling me my computer is in danger.

## Ibanezjem (Feb 28, 2005)

Here is the most recent HJT i just did now since my PC is going nuts. Also an 'Ultimate-Defender is trying to get me to install it.

Hey - sorry for the time i have taken. I lost total control of my computer and was unable to connect to the internet. I had to force a system restore to my last checkpoint and I have ended up back here. Although nothing seems to be wrong at the moment should I post a hjt log and start again or follow the last instructions you left me anyway?

## Cookiegal (Aug 27, 2003)

Please post a new HijackThis log first and then follow those instructions and post a new HijackThis log after.

*How to restart to safe mode*

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.

Put a tick by *Standard File Kill*.
In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time:

*C:\apps\ClickMe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\runsrv32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\susp.exe
*

Click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file.
It will ask for confirmation to delete the file.
Click Yes.
Continue with that procedure until you have pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.
Killbox may tell you that one or more files do not exist.
If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.
Next in Killbox go to *Tools > Delete Temp Files*
In the window that pops up, put a check by *ALL* the options there *except* these three:
XP Prefetch
Recent
History

Now click the *Delete Selected Temp Files* button.
Exit the Killbox.

Boot back to Windows normally now and do the following:

and do another scan with Ewido. Also, please do the Panda scan as requested previously.

Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click *l2mfix.exe*. Click the *Install* button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click *l2mfix.bat* and select option #*1* for *Run Find Log* by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

*IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!*

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and Microsoft windows applications. choose “close to terminate the application”.....then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. Do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

Please do another scan with Ewido. Also, please do the Panda scan as requested previously.

Then post another HijackThis log along with the scans from Ewido and Panda and the logs from the smitfraudfix and l2mfix please.

Here is the ewido scan report. I cant get the panda scan to work. When i get to the "select item to scan" page - clicking local drives-or any thing else for that matter- doesnt do anything. It tells me theres an error on page in the bottom left hand corner of explorer.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in *Safe Mode* by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;

## Ibanezjem (Feb 28, 2005)

Yeh things seem rather spiffy right now thanks. No spontanious irritations or malfunctions to report. I can, however say that I'm getting a few processess on startup (though none to really worry about) that i haven't really seen on the pc before, such as microsoft packages asking me if i'd like to install software bundles that probably, and my ati graphics card opening its own taskbar processes. They aren't really that much of a problem, like i said, but I would like to ask if its advisable to run msconfig and uncheck the boxes for these processes to startup or should i just leave it as it is? I'll post a final HJT log and hope it looks clean though.

Oh - I'd also like to ask one more question regarding lines in these logs that end in file missing.. what does this generally mean - apart from a file is missing - is it a bad thing?

Thanks again for your time. You have been a great help.

Go to Start - Run - type in msconfig - click OK and click on the startup tab.

Uncheck each of these so they don't run at start-up. When you reboot you will get a box telling you that your are running in selective start-up. You can just check off where it says "do not show me this message again" or something to that effect.

*Microsoft Works\wkfud.exe
Virtual CD v4 SDK
Microsoft Works\WksSb.exe
ATI Technologies
Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe
Adobe\Acrobat 7.0
Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE*

The (missing files) are not always missing as this is a bug in HijackThis for certain entries. If it's a legit entry and it shows (file missing) it's best to leave it alone.

Now you should turn system restore off to flush out all previous system restore points, then turn it back on and create a new restore point:

To turn off system restore, on the Desktop, right click on *My Computer* and click on *Properties.*
Click the *System Restore* tab.
Check *Turn off System Restore.*
Click Apply and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a new restore point, click on *Start* – *All Programs* – *Accessories* – *System Tools* and then select *System Restore*.

In the System Restore wizard, select *Create a restore point* and click the Next button.

Type a name for your new restore point then click on Create.

I also recommend downloading *SPYWAREBLASTER* for added protection.

*Read here* for info on how to tighten your security.

*Delete your temporary files:*

In safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit - Select All then Edit - Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start - Run and type *%temp%* in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click *Edit - Select All* then hit *Delete* to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel - Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

*Empty the recycle bin*.
